Tapestry Weaving in March

Weave your own contemporary wall hanging. Using small frame looms, you will explore simple weaving and knotting techniques and have fun with colour, texture and shape.

Sessions will be from 7-9pm every Thursday evening in March (2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th) and will be held at the Little Beehive Co-op in Nelson. Please plan to come along to as many sessions as you can in order to complete your piece – weaving is slow and steady work 🙂 Each session costs $20 plus a little more for the yarns and materials you use.

Everything will be provided but you’re welcome to bring along any special materials you wish to incorporate in your piece. You might also like to go foraging or beach combing for a strong driftwood stick (or something similar that is about 20cm long) to hang your piece from.

There are only 4 places left, so please book soon.

On the looms…..

(Oops. I have now edited this post to include the photos that should have been in it! my apologies…..)

The studio has been really busy over the last couple of months. Amongst other things, I’ve made a custom guitar strap, some cloth of hand spun wedding dress strips, some slightly Art Deco geometric wall pieces and a few little bookmarks.

The spinning wheel has been busy too, making threads from merino/silk and also from some lovely wool from B’s sheep, whose names are ‘white spot’ and ‘bad hair day’.

….and off the loom, possible new work is emerging and developing inside a tiny sketchbook.

The Wednesday weaving students have been really busy too with beautiful scarves, table mats, rugs, tapestries and tea towels.

Wednesday Weavers

Introducing the ‘Wednesday Weavers’ – a new beginners course for anyone interested in learning to weave.

The course is split into two parts as follows:

The first two/three sessions are spent learning to weave on looms that are already set up so you will be weaving fabric samples from the first week.

Then for the remainder of the course, you will work on a personal project; learning to plan and design, choose suitable yarns, set up a loom and weave an item such as a scarf, table mat, wall hanging or a small fabric length suitable for later sewing into a bag, purse, cushion.

During the course you will practice using visual inspiration to guide design choices, become familiar with a loom and other studio equipment, set up a loom from start to finish, learn to weave basic fabric structures using various yarns and fibres, create fabric samples and finally weave a personal project.

Each class will run at Founders Park, Nelson from 10am -12noon, every Wednesday, for eight weeks starting on the 11th February and finishing on the 1st April 2015.  The course price for Term 1 is $195 and all materials are included.

If you are interested, please book your place through the Chalkle website or email me directly.
